I-THRIVE Project – Workshop on Developing the 12-month training curriculum on Rehabilitation specialized in Occupational Therapy.

On September 30, 2019 in Hue City, the Medical Committee Netherlands – Vietnam (MCNV) and the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy organized the Workshop on Developing the 12-month training curriculum on Rehabilitation specialized in Occupational Therapy (OT). The workshop was attended by more than 30 delegates representing Vietnam Rehabilitation Association, Center for Creative Initiatives in Health and Population (CCIHP), Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Thua Thien Hue Department of Health, Quang Nam Department of Health, Hue Central Hospital, Thua Thien Hue Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital, Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy, Hai Duong Medical Technical University, Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the Manipal  Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), and representatives of non-governmental organizations including CRS, HI, IC and VNAH.

The Project “Interdisciplinary rehabilitation services supporting children with intellectual and developmental disabilities to thrive” (I-THRIVE) is a 3-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), with project owner is CCIHP and MCNV is the co-implementing unit.

The project has three objectives,  in which MCNV is in charge of the first objective “To enhance the capacity of rehabilitation professionals, focusing on district level, with 3 specialties of Occupational Therapy (OT), Physiotherapy (PT) and Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)”, implementing with a number of international and national universities. The Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy is an important partner of MCNV in organizing the training of specialized in OT.  The development of training curriculum for a 12-month course in OT is an activity that helps achieve this important objective. In addition to cooperating with MCNV to implement training of OT, the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy is also a partner of CCIHP in implementing the second objective of this project: To develop the interdisciplinary rehabilitation model for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The workshop witnessed the Signing Ceremony between CCIHP, MCNV and Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The signing and implementation of this cooperation agreement is one important result in the entire implementation process of the project “I-THRIVE”.

At the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Vu Quoc Huy, Vice Principal in charge of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy expressed his strong commitment to accompany MCNV and CCIHP to carry out project activities to achieve the best results. Assoc. Prof. Sumita Rege, lecturer of the OT department, Manipal  Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) India introduced the detailed training curriculum for a 12-month course in occupational therapy. This 12-month course is for provincial and district health workers in two provinces supported by the project – Quang Nam and Thua Thien – Hue. Graduates trained to practice occupational therapy techniques for helping people with disabilities, illnesses and injuries to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), can integrate into the daily life successfully.

    This is so wonderful to see these courses and activities moving along. time certainly flies past and 2020 is going to be a busy and exciting year.
