Half of youth in Muong Cha marries before 18

Two years ago, Vang Thi Chia, a then 15-year old girl from an ethnic minority in Dien Bien province, still went to Muong Cha High School, as did most boys and girls in her village. She fell in love with a classmate and got pregnant because she had learned nothing about safe sex. Not form her friends, nor her parents or her teachers. Her parents gave her permission to marry her boyfriend. A tough decision, because it ment she had to quit school.

Hoa is a 9-year-old girl, living with her grandmother in a tiny urban village in a remote part of Dien Bien province. Hoa suffers from cerebral palsy. Her family is extremely poor. Her parents, farmers, can hardly manage. When Hoa was 2 years old, because of her handicap, her parents left her with her grandmother, who since then takes care of her.

Documentaries to inspire poor women

Together with the Vietnamese Centre for Women and Development, MCNV has started a unique two-year film project ‘Filming Development’ in which trained volunteers shoot a number of documentary films on the daily life of women in Vietnam.

From the very beginning the work of MCNV in Quang Tri Province is made possible by contributions from the donors in the Netherlands. Six years ago, we managed to get a generous subsidy which enabled us to fund additional programs and staff. But last year the subsidy period ended and we did not yet succeed in finding new sources.

In the beginning of 2016, MCNV called attention to support people with a mental illness, like Ken, a young boy who lived in a wooden cage for many years, his schizophrenia seemingly untreatable.
